Former President Trump's lawyers asked a federal court on Thursday night to seize the New York hush money case from the state as he seeks to overturn his conviction.
Why it matters: Trump is due to be sentenced on Sept. 18 for his historic conviction on 34 felony counts over falsifying business records in connection with a hush money payment to adult film actress Stormy Daniels over an alleged sexual encounter.
His filing seeks to delay this, arguing that his constitutional rights were violated during the prosecution and that it went against the Supreme Court's ruling on presidential immunity. ... Read more

Britain's bankers want Donald Trump back Whisper it, but the City of London wants Donald Trump back. As the U.S. heads for a highly contentious and close election in November, at the top of London's pragmatic financial district there's a distinct lack of fear, and even a little enthusiasm, at the prospect of Trump returning to the White House. Of course, it's not all sunshine and rainbows. For the free-market City, a Trump presidency could come with unwelcome protectionist attitudes toward global trade and potentially inflammatory views of the war in Ukraine, which could roil markets. But Trump's more laissez-faire stance on finance could also in theory make it easier to access the U.S. market at a time when the City is trying to find growth, having lost a chunk of its EU business after Brexit. ... The U.S. Army rebuked the Trump campaign on Thursday, issuing a statement over an encounter at Arlington National Cemetary earlier this week and confirming that a cemetery employee was "abruptly pushed aside" while the former president was visiting the grounds.
Why it matters: The apparent altercation between former President Trump's aides and an Arlington official ignited intense scrutiny over the Trump campaign's seemingly political use of the sacred site.
The U.S. Army oversees the management of Arlington National Cemetery, as well as enforcing rules pertaining to filming or photography on the property.
The latest: An Army spokesperson said in a statement that participants in a wreath-laying ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and a visit to Section 60 "were made aware of federal laws, Army regulations and DoD policies, which clearly prohibit political activities on cemetery grounds." ... During the past 48 hours, former President Trump has boosted a barrage of social media posts that included threats to jail critics and opponents, repeated QAnon slogans and a suggestion that Vice President Kamala Harris slept her way to the top.
Why it matters: Trump's Truth Social musings and re-posts have grown more frequent and more vitriolic as new polls suggest he's losing ground to Harris - though they're unlikely to win him new supporters.
Few undecided voters hang out on Truth Social, and Trump's posts there don't draw nearly the level of media coverage his tweets did in previous campaigns.

Trump takes sexist Harris attacks to ‘whole other level’ on Truth Social Donald Trump has reposted a crudely misogynistic comment about Kamala Harris on Truth Social in a move that reprised his past record of sexist behaviour and brazenly flouted pleas from members of his own party to emphasize issues over personal attacks. With fresh polls showing Harris further improving her standing - and widening the gap with her opponent among women voters - Trump drew online opprobrium by sharing a vulgar post on his social media site implying that the Democratic nominee owed her political rise to sexual favours. CHICAGO - I sat down Wednesday to indulge in my morning ritual of an espresso; this time at the Gallery Cafe just a couple of miles from the United Center in Chicago - the site of the 2024 Democratic National Convention. As I checked the latest news on my laptop a white gentleman with a short gray beard, dressed in red sweatpants and a dark blue t-shirt approached me and pointed at my press passes hanging around my neck. "You here covering the Democrats?"
I made a mental note to once again try to remember to remove the passes until needed. "Yes," I said.
"I'm a Republican," he said evenly.
"Okay," I answered, waiting to hear what came next.
"I f***ing love those guys," he said with a big grin. He then shook my hand, turned to leave after telling me to enjoy my coffee and dropped a suggestion about Donald Trump indulging himself in a manner not recommended for those who are not contortionists.
I didn't expect that. I also haven't expected the "Happy Warrior" vibe nor the spontaneity of celebrations along with the well-choreographed celebrations at the DNC that have permeated Chicago during the convention. But make no mistake, none of it is about Kamala Harris. It's all about President Joe Biden not being on the ticket and the hope that now "we can finally beat Trump." ... Read more

A lawyer who advised members of the far-right Oath Keepers to delete their text messages in the aftermath of their leaders' role in the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol pleaded guilty Wednesday to obstructing federal investigators. Kellye SoRelle, who had a romantic relationship with Oath Keepers founder Stewart Rhodes, admitted that she advised others in the group to destroy evidence. She also pleaded guilty for being present on Capitol grounds during the riot, though she did not enter the building. SoRelle’s plea ends a saga that has been pending for years, including several months while U.S. District Judge Amit Mehta determined whether she was competent to stand trial or enter a voluntary plea. Kamala Harris' emergence as the Democratic Party's standard-bearer has been met with barrage of claims by former President Donald Trump and his allies that the vice president seized the party nomination in an undemocratic coup and is preparing to rig the election against him. The accusations, barely mentioned at the Republican National Convention in July, are reaching an ever more fevered pitch as Harris pulls ahead of Trump in election polling, with the former president labeling any inconvenience or obstacle for him as an example of election interference.

Trump casts upcoming sentencing date in N.Y. case as election interference Former President Trump's legal team requested on Wednesday that the judge in his hush money case delay sentencing until after the November presidential election. Why it matters: Trump's sentencing for the 34 felony counts he was convicted of is scheduled on Sept. 18. The Republican presidential nominee's lawyers said in a letter that proceeding with the date would constitute election interference. "Setting aside naked election-interference objectives, there is no valid countervailing reason for the court to keep the current sentencing date on the calendar," attorneys Todd Blanche and Emil Bove wrote in the request to Judge Juan Merchan, who has overseen the case. ... California experienced its hottest month on record in July as grueling heat baked the American west for weeks on end.

Several cities broke temperature records during a heatwave in early July - Palm Springs hit 124F on 5 July, while Redding in the state’s far north saw a high of 119F on 6 July.
Death Valley, the hottest place on Earth, recorded its hottest month ever in July, according to the National Park Service (NPS). In Nevada, Las Vegas reached 120F on 7 July, its hottest day in history, and set a record for number of days over 115F. ... Read more

An eye-opening expose of the impending transformation of American democracy into a theocratic state. Esme Mees lays bare the calculating plan of the Heritage Foundation to infuse government with radical "Christian" values and dismantle essential freedoms as outlined in their "Project 2025." Complimented by striking medieval wood print illustrations, and told like a series of chilling fairy tales, Mees' urgent yet eloquent prose and commitment to truth make this a must-read for anyone concerned about the future of democracy and civil liberties.

Generally, the divisions lie between the Tea Party-aligned old guard, focused more on conservative principles, and the more populist MAGA-friendly members. It's a debate that has persisted in the notoriously private group for a while, but its fights are increasingly spilling into the open. Members have had multiple public rifts over the past year - including ugly personal feuds stemming from the likely primary defeat of Freedom Caucus Chair Bob Good (R-Va.). Donald Trump's audacious lie about Vice President Kamala Harris' race confirmed what many had long suspected: running against a Black woman could summon the former president's worst impulses.
Why it matters: Amid outrage from Democrats and discomfort from Republicans, Trump is doubling down on his incendiary claim that Harris recently "became a Black person" for political convenience.
In one fell swoop, Trump hijacked a news cycle dominated by the enthusiasm surrounding Harris' campaign - and redirected attention to his long and controversial record on race.
It's a nightmare for Republicans already reeling from the tightening race: They know Trump has a strong chance of beating Harris on the issues, but fear he could alienate swing voters with attacks on her identity. ... Read more

That brings us to Donald Trump. In what passes for wisdom in that void between his ears, Trump found himself visiting the National Black Journalists Association's gathering in Chicago Wednesday where he offered his keen insight on the current presidential race. Trump falsely claimed in an interview with three Black women reporters that Vice President Kamala Harris "happened to turn Black" a few years ago, saying that "all of a sudden, she made a turn" in her identity.
You can imagine how well that went over. Of course, Trump began the interview with the reporters at the NABJ by insulting co-moderator Rachel Scott of ABC News because the event was delayed about 30 minutes for technical reasons. For those of us who covered the Trump presidency for any length of time, that was not only hypocritical but hilarious. We routinely used to bet on just how late Trump or any of his staff would be at any event it hosted. After a while we automatically assumed that when the Trump administration announced a set time for an event we would have at least 45 minutes after that announced time before the event actually occurred. ... For the past two years, Americans have been overwhelmed by a deluge of headlines suggesting democracy in the United States is under threat: Voter suppression. A shortage of drop boxes. Election deniers seeking key state offices. It can be difficult to gauge what stories suggest a truly terrifying threat to democracy, and which are simply disheartening or even petty. The Opinion Video film above aims to unpack one of the most dire threats to democracy, which includes a sophisticated plot to control not only who can vote, but which votes get counted.
One thing is certain: The 2020 race was not stolen. But Mr. Trump and his Republican enablers have been working to rig future elections to their advantage. (Of course it's the people shrieking most loudly about fraud that you really need to watch.) The former president has convinced his followers that the electoral system has been so corrupted that the only way to save America is for MAGA patriots to take over the system to ensure that the "right" candidates win going forward. His allies have been busy engineering such a legal takeover, and key pieces of the plan are already in place.

But I am concerned about how we can afford to pay for what we as a nation need to do [...] [Taxes should pay] for what we need in order to be safe and productive. As Oliver Wendell Holmes once wrote, 'taxes are the price we pay for a civilized society.'"
In response to a question as to what to recommend to the incoming president regarding a fair and sustainable income and wealth distribution, Reich said: "Expand the Earned Income Tax Credit—a wage supplement for lower-income people, and finance it with a higher marginal income tax on the top five percent. For the longer term, invest in education for lower income communities, starting with early-childhood education and extending all the way up to better access to post-secondary education."
Reich is pro-union, saying: "Unionization is not just good for workers in unions, unionization is very, very important for the economy overall, and would create broad benefits for the United States." Writing in 2014, he stated that he favors raising the federal minimum wage to $15/hr across three years, believing that it will not adversely impact big business, and will increase higher value worker availability.

Lindsey Graham
Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) said the quiet part aloud on why he’s still so close to former President Donald Trump: because we can use him for our goals. "President Trump has gotten people who wouldn't give me or Romney or anybody else the time of day. They believe he is on their side," the senator told the America First Agenda Summit crowd on Tuesday in Washington, D.C.
