Trump administration 2.0: Tracking his Cabinet, White House picks
Axios | Avery Lotz, Sareen Habeshian | 11/19/24

President-elect Trump's Cabinet and West Wing teams are quickly being assembled as the 45th president prepares to become the 47th.

The big picture: So far, he's pulled from his campaign staff, congressional and gubernatorial allies, and loyalists from his first administration to craft a team that so far appears to be more MAGA-aligned than the one he built in 2016.

Zoom in: Two big factors are driving the president-elect's decisions, Axios has reported: experience and loyalty.

Several members of his first administration became outspoken critics, including his ex-Chief of Staff John Kelly and former Vice President Mike Pence.

He's so far explicitly ruled out the return of two previous senior officials: former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and ex-UN Ambassador Nikki Haley.

He's also handed rival-turned-ally Sen. Marco Rubio the most prestigious nomination to date: secretary of state. ... Read more

Wealthy? Want to join the Trump administration? There's a tax break for you
Politico | Brian Faler | 11/18/24

Democrats' dreams of imposing stiff tax increases on the rich have gone poof, and now some super-wealthy people who campaigned for Donald Trump could get a sweet tax break just for serving in his administration.

There's an arcane provision in the tax code that allows people who join the federal government to sell stock and other assets and put off paying the capital gains tax they'd owe.

That could be lucrative perk for Trump backers like Scott Bessent, a hedge fund manager now in the running to become the president-elect's Treasury Secretary. ... Read more

What to know about Sean Duffy, Trump's Transportation secretary pick
Axios | Sareen Habeshian | 11/19/24

Former Rep. Sean Duffy (R-Wis.) was tapped by President-elect Trump on Monday to serve as Secretary of Transportation.

Why it matters: If confirmed, the Fox News contributor and former reality star will be tasked with handling the nation's air, rail and supply-chain issues.

State of play: Duffy is the second Fox News personality selected by for the new administration, following Trump's Pentagon pick, Pete Hegseth.

Trump himself launched a political career after becoming a household name via NBC's "The Apprentice." ... Read more

"Traumatized by Trumpism": The toll of outrage fatigue on MAGA
Salon | Chauncey DeVega | 10/11/24

Nothing about this is normal. On Saturday, Donald Trump returned to Butler, Pennsylvania, and held a rally at the same location where he survived an assassination attempt last July. He was greeted by many thousands of gathered MAGA fans.

Fascism is a form of religious politics; it exists outside of the normal politics of voting, campaigns, parties, “the presidential horse race” and public opinion polls that the mainstream news media are so obsessed with; on Saturday, Trump was elevated even closer to full god-king status by his admirers.

Trump’s return speech was accompanied by an operatic “commemoration” to mark the exact moment that the assassination attempt occurred in July. This was surreal and frightening, a fascist spectacle right out of Mussolini’s Italy and a Dario Argento horror movie. I am surprised that the MAGA people in Butler did not lie prostrate before Trump so that his feet would not touch the ground when he walked, or try to touch his clothing so that they could be blessed or cured of disease. ... Woodward's "War" reveals new Biden backstory
Axios | Mike Allen | 10/08/24/span>

The backstory: "War" - from Simon & Schuster, Woodward's longtime publisher - is about the collision of three ongoing wars. It covers events from Jan. 6, 2021, to mid-August 2024:

It started as a book about the war in Ukraine, beginning with the Russian buildup.

After Hamas' terrorist attack on Israel on Oct. 7, 2023, Woodward added the Middle East.

The struggle for the American presidency is at the center of it all.

Behind the scenes: Because Simon & Schuster pulls out all the stops for Woodward, he was able to make late changes to the manuscript after Biden dropped out and endorsed Harris on July 21. ... Read more

War by Bob Woodward

War is an intimate and sweeping account of one of the most tumultuous periods in presidential politics and American history.

We see President Joe Biden and his top advisers in tense conversations with Russian president Vladimir Putin, Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky. We also see Donald Trump, conducting a shadow presidency and seeking to regain political power.

With unrivaled, inside-the-room reporting, Woodward shows President Biden's approach to managing the war in Ukraine, the most significant land war in Europe since World War II, and his tortured path to contain the bloody Middle East conflict between Israel and the terrorist group Hamas.

Woodward reveals the extraordinary complexity and consequence of wartime back-channel diplomacy and decision-making to deter the use of nuclear weapons and a rapid slide into World War III.

The raw cage-fight of politics accelerates as Americans prepare to vote in 2024, starting between President Biden and Trump, and ending with the unexpected elevation of Vice President Kamala Harris as the Democratic nominee for president.

War provides an unvarnished examination of the vice president as she tries to embrace the Biden legacy and policies while beginning to chart a path of her own as a presidential candidate.

And You Thought Project 2025 Was Bad | CityNerd | 10/03/24 | 17:58

Against my better judgement, I accepted the idea that Project 2025 isn't Trump's "real" plan, and instead looked into Agenda 47, which I was assured by certain viewers was much more reasonable (and an accurate description of what Trump proposes to do if he wins back the presidency). What I found was disturbing on more levels than I can count.

Read: New filing unveils additional evidence in Trump's 2020 election case
Axios | Sareen Habeshian | 10/03/24

A lengthy motion from special counsel Jack Smith was unsealed Wednesday, making public what prosecutors say is new evidence that former President Trump and his allies tried to subvert the 2020 presidential election results.

The big picture: U.S. District Court Judge Tanya Chutkan unsealed the 165-page redacted motion, despite Trump's opposition.

In response to a recent Supreme Court decision on presidential immunity, Smith filed the motion seeking a determination Trump was acting as a private citizen and not as the president when he sought to overturn the 2020 election.... Read More

Midwestern nice debate: Vance and Walz find surprising common ground
Axios | Erin Doherty ... | 10/02/24

The lone vice presidential debate between Sen. JD Vance (R-Ohio) and Gov. Tim Walz (D-Minn.) was substantive and unusually civil, with the candidates exchanging policy proposals on immigration, abortion and gun violence but not personal attacks.

The big picture: VP debates rarely change the trajectory of an election - but this one did appear to temper the tone, however fleetingly.

Vance stepped out of his role as former President Trump's campaign trail attack dog. He laid out a new, more nuanced approach to "mass deportations" under a Trump-Vance administration and seemed to concede that abortion bans - which he has supported - can be harmful to some women.

Walz, for his part, nodded along with several of Vance's answers. At one point Vance laid out a very different approach to paid family leave than the one Walz had just espoused, and the Minnesota governor said he actually agreed with many of Vance's ideas and thought they could be incorporated into Harris' plans. ... According to a flash poll conducted by SSRS for CNN, registered U.S. voters thought the two vice presidential nominees Tim Walz and JD Vance were fairly evenly matched in last night's VP-debate, hosted by CBS News and broadcast nationally on TV. The poll of 574 U.S. adults gave Vance the slight advantage with 51 percent of votes to Walz's 49.

As the following chart shows, the first and only scheduled vice-presidential debate between Walz and Vance appears to have helped the image of both candidates in the eyes of U.S. voters. Where Walz had been viewed favorably by 46 percent of registered voters in the run up to the debate, this rose by 13 percentage points to 59 percent on October 1 following the debate. For Vance, favorable opinions rose by 11 percentage points before and after the event, from 30 percent 41 percent.

Trump's tariffs: How they work, and who would pay
Axios | Avery Lotz | 09/xx/24

To former President Trump, tariffs are "the greatest thing ever invented."

Why it matters: Trump has touted tariffs as a miraculous cure to just about every domestic and international strain, from war to child care to high grocery prices. But Trump also consistently claims tariffs are paid by countries exporting to the U.S., which isn't actually how they work.

State of play: Trump has vowed to implement massive, sweeping tariffs - while Vice President Kamala Harris has pointed to warnings from economists that they would reawaken inflation.

Still, as Trump likes to point out, President Biden did keep his China tariffs in place, and Harris hasn't said she'd lift them.

The big picture: Trump is right that tariffs can raise revenue for the governments imposing them.

But he's wrong when he claims they only punish manufacturers abroad. They can also hurt U.S. companies and consumers. ... Read more

U.S. Farmers Lost Billions to Trump-Era Retaliatory Tariffs
Statista | Katharina Buchholz | 09/23/24

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump has said that if reelected, he would impose new tariffs on China reaching 60 percent of the goods' value. After Trump's tariffs aimed at China in early 2018, retaliation from the country and other nations affected hit the U.S. economy and especially agricultural producers hard. A report from the USDA shows that between mid-2018 and the end of 2019, more than $27 billion, thereof $25.7 billion tied to China, had to be compensated with government payments to farmers. Tariff rates never exceeded 30 percent of goods value in that time period and were as low as 7.5 percent for some products, so an even higher and uniform tariff rate of 60 percent would be sure to send another shock wave through the U.S. business and farming communities.

Back then, the Trump Administration addressed concerns earmarking federal aid worth $28 billion for farmers. Under current President Joe Biden, relief payments continued to rise. Yet, farmer advocates pointed out that the subsidies were going to large farms predominantly, leaving smaller producers out in the rain. ... Read more

Trump says if he loses to Harris, "Jewish people would have a lot to do" with it

Trump received a warm reception at the "Fighting Antisemitism in America" event, but he was accused outside of the summit of "dangerous antisemitism" for saying "if I don't win this election," then "the Jewish people would have a lot to do with a loss."

Trump spoke at two events in D.C. Thursday ahead of the first anniversary of Hamas' Oct. 7 attack on Israel that sparked a war in Gaza that's killed more than 40,000 Palestinians and 1,600 Israelis.

He pointed to having a Jewish daughter, son-in-law and grandchildren as he sought to court the Jewish vote.

State of play: "If I don't win this election - and Jewish people would have a lot to do with that, 60% are voting for the enemy - Israel will cease to exist in two years," Trump said at the Israeli-American Council event.

"Eradicate climate change references"; only talk to conservative media; don't leave a paper trail for watchdogs to discover. In a series of never-before-published videos, Project 2025 details how a second Trump administration would operate.

Project 2025, the controversial playbook and policy agenda for a right-wing presidential administration, has lost its director and faced scathing criticism from both Democratic groups and former President Donald Trump. But Project 2025's plan to train an army of political appointees who could battle against the so-called deep state government bureaucracy on behalf of a future Trump administration remains on track.

One centerpiece of that program is dozens of never-before-published videos created for Project 2025's Presidential Administration Academy. An eye-opening expose of the impending transformation of American democracy into a theocratic state. Esme Mees lays bare the calculating plan of the Heritage Foundation to infuse government with radical "Christian" values and dismantle essential freedoms as outlined in their "Project 2025." The Blueprint is a clarion call to action comprised of short summaries of their plans for each government department and explanations for why we cannot trust these unpatriotic actors. Complimented by striking medieval wood print illustrations, and told like a series of chilling fairy tales, Mees' urgent yet eloquent prose and commitment to truth make this a must-read for anyone concerned about the future of democracy and civil liberties. He knew exactly how to try to turn each moment against her.

Why it matters: But he blew it badly ... repeatedly ... predictably. He simply cannot help himself, Trump insiders begrudgingly admit.

No practice, pleas or sage advice keep Trump from being Trump.

Trump takes the bait: Takeaways from Harris' big night
Axios | Zachary Basu | 09/11/24

Over and over at last night's presidential debate, Kamala Harris set traps surgically designed to provoke, rattle and enrage Donald Trump.

And over and over, Trump stepped right into them.

Why it matters: With just eight weeks until the election, Harris delivered for Democrats on the biggest possible stage - the type of national stage that ended President Biden's political career less than three months ago.

She did so by being "exquisitely prepared," as former Trump debate coach Chris Christie described her, and by exploiting her opponent's well-documented triggers.

The result was a firehouse of angry rants and bizarre claims by Trump - including a baseless conspiracy theory about immigrants eating pet cats and dogs - that will fuel headlines and Democratic ads for weeks. ... ... ... Read more

Trump denies any link to Project 2025 under pressure from Harris
Axios | Erin Doherty | 09/11/24

Vice President Harris tied former President Trump to Project 2025 early in their contentious presidential debate, claiming he is preparing to unleash a dangerous agenda.

Why it matters: Trump has tried to distance himself from the conservative playbook in recent weeks, as Democrats repeatedly try to link him to it.

Project 2025, which proposes a dramatic expansion of executive branch power, is not an official Trump campaign platform, but it was created by several of the former president's allies.

In addition to giving the president unprecedented control over the federal bureaucracy, it calls for hardline positions on issues like abortion. ... Read more

Inside Harris' high-risk, high-reward debate against Trump
Axios | Alex Thompson | 09/10/24

For Vice President Harris, tonight's debate against Donald Trump is a high-risk, high-reward moment that will test whether her re-introduction to voters can carry her to the White House.

Why it matters: Most voters already know how they feel about Trump, but fewer know how they feel about Harris.

Harris needs many of those voters - including some independents, anti-Trump Republicans, older white voters, Latinos and African Americans - to take down Trump on Nov. 5.

In the debate she'll try to show that she's not the "dangerously liberal" candidate that Trump calls her, but is the more moderate, seasoned version of herself that she's been selling in her brief campaign.

And though she's been vice president for 3-1/2 years, she'll aim to cast herself as a candidate of change - and portray the former president as a divisive voice of the past. ... Read more

Trump's allies fear he'll blow the debate - his best chance to regain ground against Harris
Politico | Natalie Allison | 09/08/24

The challenge is getting the former president to stick to the script.

Tuesday's debate may be former President Donald Trump's best chance to regain his footing in the presidential race.

But it's an opportunity some Republicans fear he could blow - particularly if Trump gets personal with Vice President Kamala Harris. Prominent GOP officials and his own advisers have urged Trump for weeks to keep the focus on critiquing her policy record, but the former president continues to signal that he's not interested in backing down from personal attacks.

"I assume she’ll come in very, very aggressive, and she will try to bait him, getting very angry, and she'll be personal and try to demean him," said former House Speaker Newt Gingrich. ... Read more

Trump's debate playbook: Call the rules 'rigged' and undermine the moderators
Politico | Alex Isenstadt and Meridith McGraw | 09/09/24

Donald Trump is laying the foundation for a "rigged" debate on ABC News before he squares off with Kamala Harris.

In interviews, fundraising appeals, rallies, and posts on social media, the former president has repeatedly blasted the host network and accused its top talent of being biased against him. He's even accused the network, without evidence, of providing the questions in advance to the Harris campaign.

"ABC is the worst network in terms of fairness," Trump said during a Fox News town hall with Sean Hannity recently. "They're very nasty, and I think a lot of people are going to be watching to see how nasty and how unfair they are."

"Do you think ABC will give Kamala every question beforehand? We already know her liberal media cronies would do ANYTHING to keep her from getting embarrassed the same way Biden was!" Trump said in a fundraising appeal. "I'm coming into this at a disadvantage - taking on Crooked Kamala AND the Fake News - but with you in my ear, I'm NOT SCARED OF ANYTHING!"" ... Read more

Appeals court seems skeptical of Trump's bid to overturn sexual abuse verdict in E. Jean Carroll case
Politico | Eric Orden | 09/06/24

NEW YORK - Donald Trump came within feet of one of his most prominent accusers, the writer E. Jean Carroll, in a Manhattan courtroom Friday as the two attended oral arguments in the former president’s appeal of last year's $5 million jury verdict that found him liable for sexual abuse and defamation.

A panel of three federal judges from the 2nd Circuit Court of Appeals appeared skeptical of Trump’s bid to overturn the May 2023 verdict that found he sexually abused Carroll in the dressing room of luxury department store Bergdorf Goodman in the the mid-1990s and years later called her claim a "hoax."

... "I'm disappointed in my legal talent, I'll be honest with you," Trump said.

Trump is also appealing the $83.3 million verdict from a second Carroll trial in which he was found liable for defaming her while he was president about the same mid-1990s sexual assault. ... Read more

Judge delays sentencing in Trump hush-money case until after US election
TheGuardian | Natalie Allison | 09/06/24

Describing conditions as "fraught with complexities", a New York judge on Friday delayed Donald Trump's sentencing on charges stemming from hush money paid to an adult film star until 26 November.

Trump, the Republican nominee for president, had asked Justice Juan Merchan to push back his sentencing date until after the US election. Trump had previously been scheduled to be sentenced on 18 September, less than two months before election day.

Trump's lawyers in August argued there would not be enough time before the sentencing for the defense to potentially appeal Merchan's forthcoming ruling on Trump's request to overturn the conviction due to the US supreme court’s landmark decision on presidential immunity. ... Read more

Shocking Investigation Of Republican Campaign To Rewrite History w/ Steve Benen | Thom Hartmann | 09/04/24 | 11:58
Ministry of Truth: Democracy, Reality, and the Republicans' War on the Recent Past by Steve Benen

For as long as historical records have existed, authoritarian regimes have tried to rewrite history to suit their purposes, using their dictatorial powers to create myths, spread propaganda, justify decisions, erase opponents, and even dispose of crimes.

Today, as America’s Republican Party becomes increasingly radicalized, it’s not surprising to see the GOP read from a similarly despotic script. Indeed, the party is taking dangerous, aggressive steps to rewrite history—and not just from generations past. Unable to put a positive spin on Trump-era scandals and fiascos, GOP voices and their allies have grown determined to rewrite the stories of the last few years—from the 2020 election results and the horror of January 6th to their own legislative record—treating the recent past as an enemy to be overpowered, crushed, and conquered. The consequences for our future, in turn, are dramatic.

Extraordinarily timely and undeniably important, Steve Benen’s new book tells the staggering chronicle of the Republican party’s unsettling attempts at historical revisionism. It reveals not only how dependent they have grown on the tactic, but also how dangerous the consequences are if we allow the party to continue. The stakes, Benen argues, couldn’t be higher: the future of democracy hinges on both our accurate understanding of events and the end of alternative narratives that challenge reality.

"In 1984, a Russian emigre named David Bogatin went shopping for apartments in New York City. The 38-year-old had arrived in America seven years before, with just $3 in his pocket. But for a former pilot in the Soviet Army—his specialty had been shooting down Americans over North Vietnam—he had clearly done quite well for himself. Bogatin wasn’t hunting for a place in Brighton Beach, the Brooklyn enclave known as "Little Odessa" for its large population of immigrants from the Soviet Union. Instead, he was fixated on the glitziest apartment building on Fifth Avenue, a gaudy, 58-story edifice with gold-plated fixtures and a pink-marble atrium: Trump Tower."

Chutkan says 2024 election 'not relevant' in deciding Trump criminal case timeline
Politico | Kyle Cheney | 09/05/24

The judge declined to set a new trial date but appeared inclined to give prosecutors a chance to lay out damaging evidence against Trump in the next few weeks.

The 2024 presidential race will have no bearing on the schedule of Donald Trump’s criminal proceedings for seeking to subvert the 2020 election, U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan vowed Thursday.

"The electoral process and the timing of the election... is not relevant here," Chutkan said at a hearing to plan next steps in the case. "This court is not concerned with the electoral schedule."

During her first significant foray into the case since a fight over presidential immunity reached the Supreme Court and waylaid the proceedings for nine months, Chutkan declined to consider setting a new trial date, calling it an "exercise in futility." Numerous pretrial disputes first need to be resolved, and both sides say they expect another appeal to freeze the case once again. ... Read more

Trump asks federal court to seize N.Y. hush-money case
Axios | Rebecca Falconer | 08/30/24

Former President Trump's lawyers asked a federal court on Thursday night to seize the New York hush money case from the state as he seeks to overturn his conviction.

Why it matters: Trump is due to be sentenced on Sept. 18 for his historic conviction on 34 felony counts over falsifying business records in connection with a hush money payment to adult film actress Stormy Daniels over an alleged sexual encounter.

His filing seeks to delay this, arguing that his constitutional rights were violated during the prosecution and that it went against the Supreme Court's ruling on presidential immunity. ... Read more

Britain's bankers want Donald Trump back
Politico | Hanna Brenton | 08/27/24

Whisper it, but the City of London wants Donald Trump back.

As the U.S. heads for a highly contentious and close election in November, at the top of London's pragmatic financial district there's a distinct lack of fear, and even a little enthusiasm, at the prospect of Trump returning to the White House.

Of course, it's not all sunshine and rainbows. For the free-market City, a Trump presidency could come with unwelcome protectionist attitudes toward global trade and potentially inflammatory views of the war in Ukraine, which could roil markets.

But Trump's more laissez-faire stance on finance could also in theory make it easier to access the U.S. market at a time when the City is trying to find growth, having lost a chunk of its EU business after Brexit. ... Read more

"Unfairly attacked": Army says Arlington employee "pushed aside" at cemetery
Axios | Avery Lotz | 08/2924

The U.S. Army rebuked the Trump campaign on Thursday, issuing a statement over an encounter at Arlington National Cemetary earlier this week and confirming that a cemetery employee was "abruptly pushed aside" while the former president was visiting the grounds.

Why it matters: The apparent altercation between former President Trump's aides and an Arlington official ignited intense scrutiny over the Trump campaign's seemingly political use of the sacred site.

The U.S. Army oversees the management of Arlington National Cemetery, as well as enforcing rules pertaining to filming or photography on the property.

The latest: An Army spokesperson said in a statement that participants in a wreath-laying ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and a visit to Section 60 "were made aware of federal laws, Army regulations and DoD policies, which clearly prohibit political activities on cemetery grounds." ... Trump's Truth Social spree: QAnon, sexism and threats of vengeance
Axios | Dave Lawler,David Lindsey | 08/29/24

During the past 48 hours, former President Trump has boosted a barrage of social media posts that included threats to jail critics and opponents, repeated QAnon slogans and a suggestion that Vice President Kamala Harris slept her way to the top.

Why it matters: Trump's Truth Social musings and re-posts have grown more frequent and more vitriolic as new polls suggest he's losing ground to Harris - though they're unlikely to win him new supporters.

Few undecided voters hang out on Truth Social, and Trump's posts there don't draw nearly the level of media coverage his tweets did in previous campaigns.

But the posts provide a taste of the stew of rage and conspiracy theories Trump and some of his most ardent supporters are consuming. ... Read more

Trump takes sexist Harris attacks to ‘whole other level’ on Truth Social

The Woodstock of politics: Democrats strike all the right chords - and scare Donald Trump - with DNC
Salon | Brian Karem | 08/22/24

CHICAGO - I sat down Wednesday to indulge in my morning ritual of an espresso; this time at the Gallery Cafe just a couple of miles from the United Center in Chicago - the site of the 2024 Democratic National Convention. As I checked the latest news on my laptop a white gentleman with a short gray beard, dressed in red sweatpants and a dark blue t-shirt approached me and pointed at my press passes hanging around my neck. "You here covering the Democrats?"

I made a mental note to once again try to remember to remove the passes until needed. "Yes," I said.

"I'm a Republican," he said evenly.

"Okay," I answered, waiting to hear what came next.

"I f***ing love those guys," he said with a big grin. He then shook my hand, turned to leave after telling me to enjoy my coffee and dropped a suggestion about Donald Trump indulging himself in a manner not recommended for those who are not contortionists.

I didn't expect that. I also haven't expected the "Happy Warrior" vibe nor the spontaneity of celebrations along with the well-choreographed celebrations at the DNC that have permeated Chicago during the convention. But make no mistake, none of it is about Kamala Harris. It's all about President Joe Biden not being on the ticket and the hope that now "we can finally beat Trump." ... Read more

Oath Keepers lawyer pleads guilty to obstructing Jan. 6 investigation
Politico | Kelley Cheney | 08/21/24

Kellye SoRelle admitted that she advised members of the extremist group to destroy evidence.

A lawyer who advised members of the far-right Oath Keepers to delete their text messages in the aftermath of their leaders' role in the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol pleaded guilty Wednesday to obstructing federal investigators.

Kellye SoRelle, who had a romantic relationship with Oath Keepers founder Stewart Rhodes, admitted that she advised others in the group to destroy evidence. She also pleaded guilty for being present on Capitol grounds during the riot, though she did not enter the building.

SoRelle’s plea ends a saga that has been pending for years, including several months while U.S. District Judge Amit Mehta determined whether she was competent to stand trial or enter a voluntary plea. He ultimately found that she knowingly admitted to her crimes. SoRelle will be sentenced in January and is likely facing several months to a year in prison. ... Read more

Kamala Harris' emergence as the Democratic Party's standard-bearer has been met with barrage of claims by former President Donald Trump and his allies that the vice president seized the party nomination in an undemocratic coup and is preparing to rig the election against him. The accusations, barely mentioned at the Republican National Convention in July, are reaching an ever more fevered pitch as Harris pulls ahead of Trump in election polling, with the former president labeling any inconvenience or obstacle for him as an example of election interference.

"This was an overthrow of a president. This was an overthrow," Trump declared at a rally in Pennsylvania on Saturday, referring to President Joe Biden giving way to Harris on the ticket. “They deposed a president," he continued. "It was a coup of a president. This was a coup." ... Read more

Why it matters: Trump's sentencing for the 34 felony counts he was convicted of is scheduled on Sept. 18. The Republican presidential nominee's lawyers said in a letter that proceeding with the date would constitute election interference.

July was California's hottest month in history

TheGuardian | Dani Anguiano | 08/10/24

Some areas see days of temperatures over 100F, drying plants and fueling wildfires as extreme heat creates deadly conditions

California experienced its hottest month on record in July as grueling heat baked the American west for weeks on end.

The state's average temperature for the month was 81.7F (27.6C), according to the National Centers for Environmental Information, but some areas endured days of temperatures greater than 100F (about 38C). Several cities broke temperature records during a heatwave in early July - Palm Springs hit 124F on 5 July, while Redding in the state’s far north saw a high of 119F on 6 July.

Death Valley, the hottest place on Earth, recorded its hottest month ever in July, according to the National Park Service (NPS). In Nevada, Las Vegas reached 120F on 7 July, its hottest day in history, and set a record for number of days over 115F. ... Read more

The big picture: Trump said Thursday he's reached an agreement with three TV networks for debates with Harris - and said he's waiting on a reply from the VP.

The GOP presidential nominee said during a press conference at Mar-a-Lago that he's agreed to a Sept. 4 debate on Fox News, a Sept. 10 one on NBC and a Sept. 25 debate on ABC.

Trump said; "She's barely competent, and she can't do an interview," he said of Harris. "But I look forward to the debates." ... Read more

Arizona Republican becomes first fake elector to plead guilty for role in Trump scheme
Politico | Kyle Cheney | 08/06/24

An Arizona Republican who falsely claimed to be a legitimate presidential elector for former President Donald Trump — part of a sweeping effort by Trump and his allies to subvert the 2020 election - has pleaded guilty for her role in the scheme.

Lorraine Pellegrino, one of 11 Arizona Republicans who falsely posed as Trump’s electors that year, accepted a guilty plea to a single charge for filing a "false instrument" - the fraudulent Electoral College certificate. The state charge was one of several she faced for allegedly joining in a conspiracy to corrupt Arizona’s election results. ... Read more

Project2025 Book

Trump calls off ABC debate, suggests Fox News face-off instead
Politico | Giselle Ruhiyyih Ewing | 08/03/24

Former President Donald Trump pulled out of the scheduled ABC debate and tried to push for a showdown on Fox News instead, drawing open derision from the Harris campaign and throwing into doubt whether any debates would take place in the general election.

In a post on Truth Social late Friday night, Trump wrote that the originally planned Sept. 10 debate on ABC was “terminated,” citing President Joe Biden ending his campaign and his legal conflicts with the network. ... Read more

Shares in New York and London tumble on fears of US recession
TheGuardian | Jasper Jolly | 08/05/24

Shares on Wall Street and in London have fallen heavily amid a global stock market rout triggered by fears of a recession in the US.

The tech-focused Nasdaq index dropped by 6% as trading in New York opened on Monday, while the broader S&P 500 index fell by 4.2% in a sell-off triggered by weak US jobs data. The Dow Jones industrial average lost more than 1,100 points, a 2.8% decline.

Japan's benchmark stock index, the Nikkei 225, suffered its biggest decline for nearly four decades. It was down by 12%, the biggest single-day fall since the Black Monday crash of 1987. Other stock indices around the world were lower as investors dumped riskier assets. South Korea’s Kospi fell by 9%, Germany's Dax was down 2%, and share indices in Australia, Hong Kong and China also fell heavily. ... Read more

Diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) are organizational frameworks which seek to promote the fair treatment and full participation of all people, particularly groups who have historically been underrepresented or subject to discrimination on the basis of identity or disability.[1] These three notions (diversity, equity, and inclusion) together represent "three closely linked values" which organizations seek to institutionalize through DEI frameworks.

Inside the Freedom Caucus' worsening identity crisis
Politico | Olivia Beavers | 08/01/24

The powerful House Freedom Caucus is wrangling with a worsening identity crisis - one that could soon redefine the group's alignment with former President Donald Trump.

Generally, the divisions lie between the Tea Party-aligned old guard, focused more on conservative principles, and the more populist MAGA-friendly members. It's a debate that has persisted in the notoriously private group for a while, but its fights are increasingly spilling into the open.

Members have had multiple public rifts over the past year - including ugly personal feuds stemming from the likely primary defeat of Freedom Caucus Chair Bob Good (R-Va.). There's also been near-constant tension over the past year due to votes to boot members, the ouster of former Speaker Kevin McCarthy, spending disputes and hardball floor tactics.

Trump's new birtherism
Axios | Zachary Basu | 08/01/24

Donald Trump's audacious lie about Vice President Kamala Harris' race confirmed what many had long suspected: running against a Black woman could summon the former president's worst impulses.

Why it matters: Amid outrage from Democrats and discomfort from Republicans, Trump is doubling down on his incendiary claim that Harris recently "became a Black person" for political convenience.

In one fell swoop, Trump hijacked a news cycle dominated by the enthusiasm surrounding Harris' campaign - and redirected attention to his long and controversial record on race.

It's a nightmare for Republicans already reeling from the tightening race: They know Trump has a strong chance of beating Harris on the issues, but fear he could alienate swing voters with attacks on her identity. ... Read more

Kamala Harris turns the GOP into the gang that couldn't shoot straight
Salon | Brian Karen | 08/01/24

That brings us to Donald Trump. In what passes for wisdom in that void between his ears, Trump found himself visiting the National Black Journalists Association's gathering in Chicago Wednesday where he offered his keen insight on the current presidential race. Trump falsely claimed in an interview with three Black women reporters that Vice President Kamala Harris "happened to turn Black" a few years ago, saying that "all of a sudden, she made a turn" in her identity.

You can imagine how well that went over. Of course, Trump began the interview with the reporters at the NABJ by insulting co-moderator Rachel Scott of ABC News because the event was delayed about 30 minutes for technical reasons. For those of us who covered the Trump presidency for any length of time, that was not only hypocritical but hilarious. We routinely used to bet on just how late Trump or any of his staff would be at any event it hosted. After a while we automatically assumed that when the Trump administration announced a set time for an event we would have at least 45 minutes after that announced time before the event actually occurred. ... The Real Threat to American Democracy | NYT | 2023 | 25:48

For the past two years, Americans have been overwhelmed by a deluge of headlines suggesting democracy in the United States is under threat: Voter suppression. A shortage of drop boxes. Election deniers seeking key state offices. It can be difficult to gauge what stories suggest a truly terrifying threat to democracy, and which are simply disheartening or even petty. The Opinion Video film above aims to unpack one of the most dire threats to democracy, which includes a sophisticated plot to control not only who can vote, but which votes get counted.

One thing is certain: The 2020 race was not stolen. But Mr. Trump and his Republican enablers have been working to rig future elections to their advantage. (Of course it's the people shrieking most loudly about fraud that you really need to watch.) The former president has convinced his followers that the electoral system has been so corrupted that the only way to save America is for MAGA patriots to take over the system to ensure that the "right" candidates win going forward. His allies have been busy engineering such a legal takeover, and key pieces of the plan are already in place.

Behind the Curtain: Trump's conviction scenario | Axios | Mike Allen,Jim VandeHei | 02/02/24 | article

Former President Trump is breezing to the GOP nomination - but, in private, is bracing for the genuine possibility that he'll be the first convicted felon in U.S. history to represent a major party.

Why it matters: Sources tell us Trump believes he'd likely be convicted if the Jan. 6 case comes to trial later this spring in Washington. If that's delayed, he could face a guilty verdict in the Manhattan hush-money case.

Trump thinks he could still win the White House - partly by making daily, theatrical appearances whenever courts are hearing his four cases, totaling 91 felony charges. But his advisers worry independents will be turned off by a conviction in a jury trial.

U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan, who is presiding over the Jan. 6 case, has been tough on Capitol rioters tried in her court, and has signaled she'll cut Trump no breaks. Jurors will be drawn from D.C., which is overwhelmingly Democratic. ... Read more

In March, 2024 Republican presidential nomination front-runner Trump is scheduled to begin standing trial on federal charges, including conspiracy to defraud the U.S., in connection with efforts to overturn his 2020 election loss. He says the charges against him are politically motivated.

"Democracy on Trial" traces the road to this unprecedented moment, and examines the implications of the historic criminal case unfolding in the midst of a presidential election year. Drawing on court documents and revelatory interviews with elected officials, former government lawyers, House Select Committee witnesses and former committee staffers, authors and journalists, the documentary reports that the work of the House Select Committee investigating the Jan. 6 Capitol attack provided the groundwork for special counsel Jack Smith's indictment of Trump and may offer insights into how the trial unfolds.

The documentary chronicles how the committee built its case against Trump and tried to prove his intent, how it chose to present its case to the American public, and criticisms of its work. Key witnesses who testified before the committee and whose firsthand accounts are now evidence in the federal case speak out in the documentary - including Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger, Georgia election official Gabriel Sterling and former Arizona Speaker of the House Rusty Bowers.

Alternative Facts

As Donald Trump's time in the White House comes to a close we looked back on some of the most defining moments of his presidency. We narrowed the list down to 10 but let's be honest there were a lot of really intense stories to choose from. First let's start with Trump's embrace of alternative facts. Alternative Facts over the course of his presidency Donald Trump made more than 30 000 documented false statements. The lieing started during his campaign but it didn't stop when he reached the White House. Here he is, the day after his inauguration: "We did a thing yesterday, the speech, did everybody like the speech? You had to like it so I've been given good news... we had a massive field of people, you saw it". But, I get up this morning I turn on one of the networks and they show an empty field. I said, "wait a minute I made a speech I looked out the field was it looked like a million, million and a half people". In reality crowd size experts estimated that trump's inauguration drew between 300,000 to 600,000 people. When challenged Trump doubled down spending essentially the first week of his presidency defending an evidently false claim over a trivial issue. This was the largest audience to ever witness an inauguration period and establishing from literally day one that this was an administration that would lie about anything and everything. The Washington Post and other fact checkers have found that donald trump tells more lies and falsehoods than any president in either party in history. ...

In an interview with The New York Times in 2008, Reich explained that "I don't believe in redistribution of wealth for the sake of redistributing wealth. But I am concerned about how we can afford to pay for what we as a nation need to do [...] [Taxes should pay] for what we need in order to be safe and productive. As Oliver Wendell Holmes once wrote, 'taxes are the price we pay for a civilized society.'"

In response to a question as to what to recommend to the incoming president regarding a fair and sustainable income and wealth distribution, Reich said: "Expand the Earned Income Tax Credit—a wage supplement for lower-income people, and finance it with a higher marginal income tax on the top five percent. For the longer term, invest in education for lower income communities, starting with early-childhood education and extending all the way up to better access to post-secondary education."

Reich is pro-union, saying: "Unionization is not just good for workers in unions, unionization is very, very important for the economy overall, and would create broad benefits for the United States." Writing in 2014, he stated that he favors raising the federal minimum wage to $15/hr across three years, believing that it will not adversely impact big business, and will increase higher value worker availability.
